The Pilot Balloons Candles and Lanterns are used for upper wind mesurement during pilot balloons ascent at night.

When released into the armosphere with a balloon inflated with hydrogen, the candle and lantern provide an illumination for tracking with a theodolite. The Wind speed and direction are then computed using electronic calculator when the azimuth and elevation readings are taken at successive intervals of time.
